TRIVIA

  • Cilan, along with Iris, was first revealed in silhouette in a preview for the Best Wishes series that aired after DP183 in Japan on July 1, 2010. The two were revealed in full exactly one month later during a trailer on Pokémon Sunday.
  • Cilan is the first of Ash's male friends not to have a traditional Japanese name in the original version of the anime.
  • In the games, Cilan can only be battled at the Striaton Gym if the player chooses Oshawott as their starter Pokémon. Notably, Ash has obtained Oshawott from Juniper as his first out of the Unova starter Pokémon, and used him in his Gym battle against Cilan. The same thing also happened to Burgundy, as she battled him once with an Oshawott.
  • Cilan is the first of Ash's male friends to have a fear of a specific Pokémon.
  • Cilan is the only main character to have Pokémon from only one generation.

BW127 - The Island of Illusions!

As Ash and his friends head to Grand Spectrala Island, they soon find themselves in a large area of fog, which starts to envelop the ship. From the fog, a massive shadow appears out nowhere and looms over the vessel, scaring them. Everyone hits the deck expecting to collide with the shadow, but nothing seems to happen. When they get up, the shadow has vanished and the fog fades away.Porter arrives on deck, and the group asks him if he saw the shadow, but he confirms that neither he nor the crew has seen anything. Despite this, everyone is certain that they did witness something. Meanwhile, a shadowed figure wearing a hat and trench coat listens in on their conversation.
The ship docks at Grand Spectrala Island, where Porter bids the gang farewell. At the same time, Team Rocket spies on the twerps aboard their submarine and plan to steal Pikachu as usual. At a local restaurant, the group asks if anyone's around, only for a big silhouetted figure to walk out from the back. Ash screams that a Snorlax has appeared, but it turns out to be the human owner of the establishment who merely looks like a Snorlax. The gang asks the owner about the giant Pokémon they saw, but the owner admits that he's never heard of any such Pokémon on the island. He does, however, reveal that a smaller island nearby is rumored to be the home of giant Pokémon. In his hurry, Ash runs down the road supposed to lead to the island, leaving Iris and Cilan in pursuit of him (the latter picks up a local guide and map as he leaves). Sighing, the owner remarks that he wasn't able to finish his explanation; the bridge leading to the island has long since been torn down, and the rumors dated back ten years ago.
At the bridge, the gang is dismayed to find the bridge torn down. Cilan confirms from the guidebook that the smaller island is a protected Pokémon sanctuary, which means Trainers probably don't go there often. Just then, the tide goes out to reveal a strip of land leading to the island. Cilan reads from his guide that the surrounding tides can change dramatically, and Iris is glad that they arrived just in time. While the group runs across the natural bridge, Team Rocket watches them from the water in wetsuits.
Reaching the smaller island, the gang walks into the forest just as a thick fog blankets the island. Iris is worried about the harshly reduced vision, while Cilan is intrigued by the mysteriousness of their location. Pikachu, sensing something, jumps off Ash's shoulder and starts calling out into the forest. This prompts massive footsteps to echo throughout the forest, and to everyone's shock and horror, a giant Heatmor rises from the trees! Heatmor breathes out a massive Flamethrower that sets the forest on fire, causing the local Pokémon to panic. A wild Foongus bumps into Iris's Axew as it tries to escape, and releases a cloud of Spore at Axew in its agitation, causing him to fall asleep. With Axew out of commission the group is forced to run for their lives, but end up at a cliff's edge instead. Ash has Pikachu attack Heatmor, but Heatmor merely shrugs off all attacks levied at it. Heatmor launches another Flamethrower that nearly throws Pikachu off the cliff, who Ash catches just in time. Before Heatmor can attack again, however, the figure from the ship jumps in front of Ash and company, raising their arms to stop Heatmor's advance. Heatmor stops, and vanishes in a brief cloud of fog, along with the mysterious figure. Cilan wonders if they've imagined everything that's happened since there's no longer any forest fire, but Iris points out that Axew is still asleep. It becomes clear that Axew needs medical attention and fast.
Separately, Jessie and James wonder about the fog, looking for the twerps. They briefly lose sight of Meowth, and seeing a Meowth shadow ahead think it's him, only for the real deal to pipe up below them, having caught up. The Meowth shadow turns out to be a giant Meowth that chases them through the forest, scaring them. At the edge of another cliff, the giant Meowth ends up blasting Team Rocket off the cliff side and into the ocean.
Trying to find their way back to the mainland, Ash's group finds themselves lost. Iris suddenly spots a Pokémon Center ahead. Ash is confused as to why a desolate island would have a Center in the first place, and Cilan points out that this Center looks extremely run down, but Iris is adamant that they visit. Inside, the Center is as dilapidated as it is on the outside, and the counter is swarmed by a group of wild Pokémon. Startled by the intrusion, they all flee in a panic. Placing the sleeping Axew on the counter, Iris calls for Audino, who eagerly appears. Iris explains that Axew needs help, and Audino runs off to get Nurse Joy. Nurse Joy appears, and after inspecting Axew says she'll prepare some medicine for Axew, before returning to the back room. Audino reappears with a mortar and pestle, confusing the gang who were expecting Nurse Joy. At this, Audino panics a little, running back so Nurse Joy can reappear, who merely confirms that she'll be preparing the medicine before retreating. Audino appears with a bunch of Berries in its arms, but is startled by the gang again and runs back, leaving Nurse Joy to reappear with the Berries in her arms instead. Nurse Joy tries to reassure Iris, but goofs up a little and speaks in Audino's voice instead! This prompts Ash to ask where Audino is, leading to a chain of disappearing and reappearing of Audino and Nurse Joy, who don't seem to be able to both show up together in one place. Eventually, Nurse Joy tiredly says that Audino is busy handling other duties in the back, and she'll be making Axew's medicine. As she grinds up a Chesto Berry and Sitrus Berry with some Oran Berries, Cilan notes how old-fashioned the medicine seems to be. Shortly afterwards, Nurse Joy finishes the medicine which Iris feeds to Axew, waking him up and re-energizing him. Ash and Cilan admit that they were initially concerned that Nurse Joy didn't seem to know what she was doing, but are glad that things seem to have worked out in the end.
Just then, the strange person appears at the door of the Center, revealing herself to be an older Nurse Joy tasked with the special duty of investigating established Pokémon Centers. She explains that she'd been receiving reports of a Pokémon Center operating illegally on the island, which is why she was deployed to investigate. Pointing at the other Nurse Joy, she confirms that the "Nurse Joy" is an impostor, and demands an explanation. Silently, the fake Nurse Joy takes on glittering golden aura that nearly blinds everyone, which starts casting an illusion.
In the illusion, the Pokémon Center is good as new, and is staffed by Audino and Nurse Joy. The older Nurse Joy realizes that the Nurse Joy in the illusion was her from over ten years ago, and that they're witnessing an illusion of the past when she used to work on the island. The Nurse Joy in the past carries in a crying Zorua which Cilan notes. Nurse Joy explains that in the past, she found a Zorua that had been injured by a hunter's trap, so she had nursed it back to health before releasing it. Since then Zorua made frequent visits to the Center to help out, finding Berries and even making remedies just like Nurse Joy did. Cilan recalls that Zorua has the ability to alter its appearance, and Iris concludes that the impostor Nurse Joy must really be Zorua! Tearfully, Zorua as Nurse Joy asks why Nurse Joy had to leave. Nurse Joy admits that when Trainers stopped visiting the island Center, she was ordered by headquarters to shut the Center down - she had wanted to tell Zorua, but Zorua had stopped coming around for some reason.
The fake Nurse Joy creates another illusory flashback, revealing that close to the time when the Center had shut down, it had been staying in the forest to prepare for its coming evolution into Zoroark. Not long after, it witnessed two Pokémon poachers kidnapping a pair of wild Ducklett, enraging it and forcing it to use its giant Heatmor illusion to scare the hunters away. Nurse Joy confirms that when the hunters were arrested, they tried to speak about the giant Heatmor sighting - and all this had taken place ten years ago. Zoroark had used its illusions to protect the island, and also created the gigantic shadow that Ash and the others had seen from the ship after sensing her presence.
Nurse Joy apologizes to Zoroark for not telling it of her departure, but asks Zoroark to cease its operations; illegally operating a Pokémon Center is a serious offense. Zoroark, still in its illusion of Nurse Joy, stands silent and sad. Iris exclaims that Zoroark wasn't playing the part of Nurse Joy as a prank, but was being a fully competent Nurse Joy in its own right, since it healed Axew with its remedy. Cilan guesses that the wild Pokémon they saw earlier must have been in the Pokémon Center to receive medical attention as well. The gang beg Nurse Joy to keep the Pokémon Center open for wild Pokémon instead of closing it. Nurse Joy, realizing that Zoroark merely wants to help out, praises Zoroark for its efforts and agrees to stay with Zoroark to keep the Center available for wild Pokémon. Zoroark lifts its illusion and has a tearful reunion with its friend, while the gang decide to help clean up the old Pokémon Center. By evening, the Pokémon Center is good as new, and Zoroark and Nurse Joy promise to keep everything running smoothly. The next day, Ash and friends leave on the next ferry and wave goodbye to Nurse Joy and Zoroark, as their journey continues.

BW126 - Crowning the Scalchop King!

Having lunch aboard the cruise ship while it heads to the next island, Ash and his friends notice that many of the passengers have Oshawott and Dewott, wondering if it has anything to do with their next destination. Porter passes by, asking them if everything is fine, prompting Ash to ask where the ship is headed. Porter says that Scalchop Island is their next destination; a scalchop-shaped island that was supposedly formed by seashells. Porter explains that all the Trainers are going to participate in the Scalchop King Competition. Right on cue, Oshawott emerges, expressing its interest in entering.
On the island, the gang marvels at the wide array of scalchop-shaped snacks and patterned merchandise. Freddy O'Martian, dressed in a scalchop costume, declares the opening of the competition as Ash recognizes him. Freddy declares that the winner will be awarded with a solid gold scalchop, which the audience all marvel at. Iris wonders if it's really made of gold while Cilan appraises its shine. Meanwhile, Team Rocket plan to steal the gold scalchop for themselves. Meowth points out that they need an Oshawott or Dewott to enter in the first place, but Jessie and James have other plans that worry Meowth. Freddy also declares that winning Oshawott or Dewott will also reign alongside the island's queen, "Osharina", who walks onstage with a royal crown and cape. Oshawott instantly falls in love with her, running to the front of the stage to woo Osharina with a bouquet, but is rudely denied. Oshawott tries again, but is smacked down by a Dewott wearing an orange bandanna. Ash runs to recover Oshawott, demanding an explanation. The Dewott's Trainer, Cadbury, snidely notes that Oshawott deserved it for disrupting the proceedings, and declares his Dewott, Caesar, to be the only one worthy of becoming the Scalchop King, as he has been raised precisely for the role. Ash and Cadbury trade barbs as Oshawott and Caesar glare at each other, ready to settle the score during the competition. Freddy proceeds to introduce the island's Don George and Nurse Joy as judges, who've also dressed for the part, as well as Osharina sitting on her throne.
The first round involves all the participants exhibiting their scalchops to be rated on appearance. An Oshawott and Dewott present their scalchops to good reviews from the judges. Iris dryly remarks that she can't tell one scalchop from another and Cilan admits that he doesn't have what it takes to be a "Scalchop Connoisseur". Ash's Oshawott presents his, and the crowd gasps for a moment before erupting into applause. Caesar's turn follows, and Cadbury smugly notes that the audience's reaction was much more favorable, leaving Ash to retort that the competition isn't over. Meanwhile, Jessie and James have dressed Meowth as a Dewott, and gave him a bag with two "custom-made" scalchops. Meowth's turn arrives, and he pulls the two scalchops from the bag, fearful of what might happen if everyone realizes the massive size discrepancy. However, no one seems to catch on, instead cheering loudly for Meowth, and the judges praise Meowth's large scalchops, making Meowth more confident.
The second round has participants fling their scalchops at a target. Ash's Oshawott throws his scalchop and barely misses the target, scarcely hitting the target on its edge. Caesar flings both of its scalchops, landing one of them close to the center and prompting Cadbury to gloat at Ash again. Meowth throws his, but ends up missing completely, to which James activates a remote control. Sure enough, Meowth's "scalchop" spins around like a boomerang and lands in the center of the target, inflicting a deep gash. To the viewers, James explains that the custom-made scalchops are equipped with directional thrusters.
The third round is called the "Brick Break" event, shocking Ash as he knows Oshawott can't use Brick Break. Freddy states that he doesn't mean the actual attack, but refers to breaking a stack of twenty tiles with scalchops. He also states that only the top three competitors will be moving on. Up first, Caesar easily breaks through eleven tiles. Meowth goes up next, worried that he can't break any of the bricks, but James reveals to the viewers again that he made Meowth's scalchops out of strong plastic composites. Leaping into the air, Meowth dives onto his stack of tiles headfirst, and ends up breaking through the entire stack to massive applause but with his charm nearly poking through his costume, having shielded his fall. Ash's Oshawott is up last, and after some encouragement Oshawott manages to break through eleven tiles as well, qualifying him for the next round.
The fourth round has participants put up a performance involving their scalchops. Cadbury orders an Aqua Jet, where Caesar jets around in a circle formation to create a rainbow, impressing everyone. Ash has Oshawott do the same thing, but as he spins in mid-air he catches sight of Osharina, causing him to crash into Ash in his infatuation. This earns him the judges' disapproval. For Meowth, "Jesty" and "Jacen" set up a big trampoline and order Meowth to use Swords Dance, in which Meowth merely flails his scalchops around wildly while bouncing. Everyone seems to enjoy the performance, but as Meowth lands the bits of his costume fall off and the blue body paints fades away, having been disturbed by the bouncing. Everyone is shocked to find an impostor in the competition. Freddy demands an explanation, prompting Team Rocket to recite the motto. Ash and friends are angry at Team Rocket who insist they're not after Pikachu, but the golden scalchop. Pikachu launches a Thunderbolt which Meowth blocks with the custom scalchops; James explains to the viewers that they were also built with high defensive strength. However, after Pikachu's attack the scalchops fizzle with the accumulated electricity and explode, sending Team Rocket blasting off.
With only two competitors remaining, the final round commences with a battle in a pool and pontoon arena. Ash and Cadbury trade more insults as the round begins with Iris and Cilan cheering Ash on. Cadbury orders Aqua Jet and Hydro Pump, and Ash responds in kind, but both times Ash's Oshawott is overpowered. Cadbury declares that since Oshawott is Dewott's pre-evolved form, Caesar has more power and is clearly superior, but Ash disagrees. Cadbury orders a Surf from Caesar, who creates a massive wave from the pool, but Ash counters with Aqua Jet which causes Oshawott to lunge at Caesar, breaking the wave. As both Pokémon land, Caesar challenges Ash to a duel using only scalchops, since the competition is all about the scalchops. Ash refuses to back down and agrees. Both Trainers order Razor Shell, but Oshawott loses out both times. Cadbury orders a double Razor Shell and Aqua Jet combo, prompting Caesar to use Aqua Jet into the air while both its scalchops have Razor Shell active. Encouraging Oshawott, Ash orders the same combination, and Oshawott recovers in time to use his attacks, placing his scalchop in front of his Aqua Jet, sharply increasing its power like a torpedo. Both sea otter Pokémon clash for the final time and are flung back, heavily damaged and struggle to get up. Caesar is first to rise, but quickly keels over, defeated! Cadbury is horrified as Ash's Oshawott is declared the winner.
In the following ceremony, Don George awards Oshawott with the golden scalchop which Oshawott happily accepts. Freddy says that Oshawott will now rule over Scalchop Island alongside Osharina. Catching this, Ash asks Freddy what this entails; Freddy reveals that Oshawott will stay on the island as King until the next Competition, which will take place exactly one year later! Ash is shocked at this, and Cilan confirms that the rules mean that the winner must stay on the island. Iris blanches, worried that Ash will have to leave Oshawott behind. Ash tries talking to Oshawott about this dilemma, but Oshawott is quickly distracted as Osharina walks towards him. Ash realizes that Oshawott is in love with Osharina and wants to stay behind, recalling the various times he trained and fought with Oshawott as Trainer and Pokémon. Ash struggles to say goodbye, but Freddy shouts at Osharina, asking where she's going. To everyone's surprise Osharina leaps off the stage, running happily into Caesar's waiting arms! Cadbury sheepishly states that both Caesar and Osharina must have been in love with each other all along. Oshawott is devastated by this, to the point that his scalchop falls off and snaps in two! Noticing this, Freddy declares that the rules disqualify all participants whose scalchops end up breaking, meaning that Cadbury and Caesar have won the competition. As everyone cheers for Caesar, Oshawott lies on the stage, still stunned by the loss.
That evening as the ship sails away from Scalchop Island, everyone consoles a sad Oshawott who had to have his scalchop bandaged. Ash says that at least the both of them will continue to travel together, while Cilan and Iris say that Oshawott will definitely recover and bounce back. Sure enough, Oshawott catches sight of a passing Cinccino and chases after her in admiration. Everyone comments on Oshawott's quick recovery as the episode ends.
